W112       SHOWING AND TELLING LOCAL STORIES         Cost: $30
Start:        Tuesday, January 10 –Feb. 7                   Time: 1-3pm
Sessions:    5                                                         Location: Henry Grube Centre
Presenter:     Ginny Ratsoy Associate Professor of English, Thompson Rivers  University

Previous KALS Literature courses have included reading and discussing locally produced plays (2009) and studying novels set in the Kamloops area (2010).

This course incorporates both:  We are reading additional locally set work and taking the word “local” across the country and around the world by studying locally produced plays with “faraway” settings.

What links these works – besides the local connection—is the power of storytelling.  Each complete work is not  only, obviously, a story; each work, in different ways, reflects on the power of the story---through tribute to oral traditions, stories within stories, and the like.

W212         VOYAGING WITH ODYSSEUS:                             Cost: $35
                An exploration of Homer’s Odyssey
Start:          Wednesdays, February 15- April 18        Time: 10-12noon
Sessions:    10
Location:  CSI Seniors Activity Centre (Brock Shopping Centre)
Presenter: Rod Michell MA English and Literary Arts Oxford
(Rod has taught for over 30 years, many of them at TRU and other educational institutions)

Almost two years ago a small but intrepid band of KALS readers set sail with Homer and joined Odysseus as he combated forces both divine and human on his journey home.  All of us arrived safely – in the end.  Yet Homer himself says, early in his poem, “Launch out on his story Muse….sing for our time too.”  And so the time has come to take the journey again.  Ship aboard with us for a reading and discussion of this epic narrative that stands at the threshold of western literary tradition.  Admire Homer’s poetic skill and narrative subtlety, interweaving the elements of his story both to create tension and to uncover complexity of character.  Above all, discover that the significant issues we face today, of self, of family and society were central also to Greek experience 2800 years ago.

Bring a lifejacket!

Textbook:   The Odyssey,  Translation by Roger Fagles

Of the 35 plays attributed to Shakespeare in “A Catalogue of the several Comedies, Histories and Tragedies” of the First Folio of 1623, 14 are comedies.  Well-versed in the conventions of this type of drama, Shakespeare transformed the traditions and created a startling range of comedies  such as the romantic comedy, “As You Like It” and the edgy, dark comedy that is “Measure for Measure”.

During our 6 sessions, we will look at “As You Like It”, “Measure for Measure” and the “Tempest” – Shakespeare’s final solo work. This KALS course has only one prerequisite :  frame your mind to mirth and merriment, which bars a thousand harms and lengthens life”  (The Taming of the Shrew).
