NORMA WATTS AWARDED PLAQUE

Norma Watts is awarded a plaque
and certificate for her valuable contribution to Kamloops
Adult Learners Society (KALS). Norma was the founding member
and first program chair of KALS. Norm Moss, KALS special
events chairman, made the presentation at KALS AGM on
September 8. KALS offers 14 daytime courses for seniors this
fall. For more information

ROLAND
COBB
RECIPIENT
OF THE MARGARET CLEAVELY PRESENTERS AWARD
Roland
Cobb was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1936. He moved with
his parents and sister to Vancouver in 1941. Roland
attended school in West Vancouver and then went to UBC to
earn a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Physics.
In 1961 he moved to Rochester, N.Y. Where he worked with
the Cosmic ray Group at the University of Rochester,
receiving a PhD in 1967. In the same year he married his
wife, Abundia, in Rochester and then travelled west to
Victoria, B. C. to work on the TRIUMF nuclear accelerator
project at the University of Victoria. In 1970, he moved to
Kamloops to teach Physics at the newly opened Cariboo
College. In 1971, he built an observatory at the college
and began teaching an astronomy course. Roland retired in
1999. Roland’s astronomy classes for us have been a delight
to all who have taken them in.
